Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is a vaccination?

A vaccination is a shot that helps prevent you from getting a disease. Vaccines contain a dead or weakened form of the virus or bacteria that cause the disease. When you get a vaccine, your body is able to build up immunity to that disease.

  • Why are vaccinations important?

Vaccinations are important because they help protect you from diseases. Vaccines help your body build up immunity to diseases so that you are less likely to get sick from them. If everyone is vaccinated against a disease, it becomes harder for the disease to spread. This is referred to as ‘herd immunity.

  • What are the side effects of vaccinations?

The most common side effect of vaccination is soreness or redness at the injection site. You may also experience a fever, chills, or body aches. These side effects are usually mild and go away on their own.

  • What are the risks of not being vaccinated?

If you are not vaccinated, you are at risk of getting sick from diseases that vaccines could prevent. You may also be at risk of spreading diseases to other people, particularly if you are around young children or older adults who are more vulnerable to infection.
