Many people, men and women are unaware that they have obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA).
OSA may be an early warning sign of heart disease or other chronic health problems such as diabetes, erectile dysfunction, nocturia (passing urine at night), and depression and anxiety. It also puts you at risk of excessive daytime sleepiness, impaired mental functioning and having a motor vehicle accident. If you:
- snore loudly;
- feel tired or sleepy in the day;
- have been told you stop breathing in your sleep;
- have been diagnosed with high blood pressure; or
- have a neck circumference of 43cm or more- then ask your doctor about undergoing a sleep test.
